Vakona has been named Connect Västerbotten’s Company of the Year 2021.
The award recognises Vakona’s journey from many years of research at Umeå University to a company developing a new, antibiotic-free treatment for acne.
Research with commercial potential
Vakona’s product is based on a naturally occurring bacterial protein identified by Oleg Alexeyev’s research group. The protein breaks down the biofilm formed by acne-associated bacteria and is intended for use in a topical cream or ointment.
The recognition from Connect highlights the company’s progress in turning scientific results into a treatment concept with the potential to improve care for one of the world’s most common skin conditions.
